About LAFP

The Louisiana Film Prize is an idea born out of a boozy, tequila-soaked night where our fearless leader slammed his fist on the table and shouted to the heavens: “Why the hell isn’t there a contest/festival where filmmakers could use their creative prowess and impressive technical skills to make short films and compete for a huge pile of cash?” The next morning, hung-over, he found a new tattoo that read “Louisiana Film Prize. Shoot a short film, Win $50,000.” The rest is history. We at the Louisiana Film Prize are here to spark creativity and support our home town of Shreveport-Bossier.

So, What is the Louisiana Film Prize?

The Louisiana Film Prize is a short narrative film contest with one rule: You have to shoot your film in the Shreveport-Bossier area. That’s it. Post production, music, and effects can all be done at home. Film in Shreveport-Bossier (and be able to prove it), and you will be eligible for the Louisiana Film Prize and, most importantly, you will be eligible to win it.

Since the early 2000s, Louisiana has been known as Hollywood South. Shreveport-Bossier, Louisiana has had its fair share of blockbuster movies, but has become a bastion for independent, low-budget productions for a reason: It’s an easy place to make movies. Film Prize Foundation created the prize not only to bring opportunity to filmmakers but to bring them to a place where they can thrive – a community built for production.

Once you complete a rough cut of your film, you must turn it in by the deadline (July 11, by 11:59  p.m.). We will then pick 20 finalists. These 20 finalists will each be given $500 and an invite to show their finished film during LA Film Prize Weekend (October 5-7). Here, they will compete for a grand prize of $50,000. A full list of prizes is available here.

Fifty Grand? Are you Serious?

Yes, we’re serious and, yes, it’s $50,000 in cold, hard cash for the winner. On Louisiana Film Prize weekend, two groups will determine the winner. A panel of celebs and film experts will account for 50% of the vote. The audience will determine the other 50%. If you’re a finalist, you’re invited to stack the votes in your favor. Convince (or, heck, pay) your friends, family, colleagues and anyone else you want to bring to Shreveport-Bossier to vote for your film. If you want to make it happen, you can own half the vote.

But wait, that’s not all! $50,000 is nice, yes, but each year we up the ante with new prizes and opportunities for filmmakers including grants and other really awesome stuff. Head over to The Prizes to learn about this year’s unique offering.
